Description  Radars with several pulses sent at different frequencies near the 60 GHz O2 absorption band have been proposed to determine surface pressure by measuring the differential absorption on and off the band. In fact the columan oxygen content is proportional to the ground pressure. This thesis will investigate what kind of precision and accuracy can be obtained for such parameter when considering the selection of different tones within the oxygen band and accounting for the effects introduced by temperature, water vapor, and hydrometeors, as well as particle size distributions and surface backscatter uncertainties. This will be done by using global model output and simulating the radar signal with a state-of-the art radar simulator. The thesis is part of an ESA-funded study to refine a Cubesat mission proposal for atmospheric pressure measurement.

Required skills Excellent programming level in Matlab / python.
Good knowledge of English (written and spoken).
Knowledge of weather and / or satellite orbits and / 0 radar and / or signal processing.
