Thesis type SIMULATION/ANALYSIS

Description Motivation
Comfortable and healthy indoor environments are becoming the principal aim of the practitioners and researchers work. Innovative thermal solutions (lightweight and super insulating) for building facades become challenging from the acoustic point of view. The investigation of integrated studies are becoming more frequent in the context of the achievement of the overall indoor environmental quality.

Scope
The project aims to investigate the acoustic properties of a truly innovative curtain wall façade system, which is under development, in the framework of the EU horizon 2020 project Powerskin+ “www.powerskinplus.eu”. …
A sound simulation tool (INSUL) will be used to quickly develop performance estimates for a diverse range of wall and glazing constructions. The following parameters Transmission Loss (TL) or Sound Reduction (R) in 1/3 octave bands along with weighted indices (STC or Rw) for use in sound transfer calculations.
A preliminary analysis of an overview of the prediction theory and its applicability to innovative building façade solutions will be tested.
Correlation of the acoustic and thermal performance will be also investigated. For this sake the overall façade thermal performance will be assessed by using the software Physibel BISCO/TRISCO.

Research questions
1. How can you model the sound insulation properties of innovative building facades solutions?
2. How can you simulate sound insulation properties of innovative opaque and transparent building facades solutions?
3. Which are the innovative thermal design variables that influence the acoustic performance?

Methods
Literature review, Sound insulation theory and models review, software simulations (INSUL)
