Description SMS-based or app-based two-factor authentication using smartphone is secure, but it can also be time-consuming to set up and use. Hardware-based security keys provide a fast no-fuss way to use two-factor authentication. The thesis project aims to investigate strengths and drawbacks of this technology, focusing the analysis specifically on the FIDO U2F stabdard, developed by Google and Yubico, and now administered by the FIDO Alliance. The analysis will be done by setting up a real laboratory environment and, finally by evaluating critical aspects and possible vulnerabilities of the different FIDO tokens.
