Descrizione High performance glazings systems, such as the ones integrated highly selective coatings, smart materials, cavity blinds etc., are subject to high climatic loads (especially as related to temperatures) which could affect the operating performance and durability of its components.
This thesis is aimed to develop and test a methodology to quantify and temperature distribution in different configurations of high performance glazing, for application in different climatic boundary conditions, so to assess the requirements for durability of the system subcomponents.
The thesis will start with a literature review on high performance glazing systems and its subcomponents (spacers, coatings, cavity blinds, other advanced materials etc.), and their use in zero energy buildings. In parallel the student will learn modelling and simulation methods to evaluate the temperature distribution in such building components, such as 1D simulation tools (i.e. WINDOW, own developed thermal networks), and 2D methods (like FEM, by means of BISCO and/or VOLTRA), together with some basic Python scripting (to run simulation in batches and pre / post-process data).
These tools will be used by the student first to compare the results of simpler models to more complex ones, and after to evaluate the temperature distribution in different glazing configurations, in different climatic boundary conditions and orientations, and different building contexts, by means of parametric study and sensitivity analysis. The final aim could be to develop a simple tool for early design decision making to assess the durability of glazing components under thermal loading. There could be also the possibility to perform some experimental tests, that can be used to validate some of the models developed (to be discussed).
The implications of these results will be presented and discussed, in the perspective of the durability and the performance of the advanced insulated glazing systems for Zero Energy Buildings.
