Description The research activity is focused on the development of open cell foams produced from surface coated natural fibers. The Layer by Layer deposition is employed as main surface modification technique. This technique allows to deposit nanostructured coatings by exploiting electrostatic interactions occurring between polyelectrolytes (natural or synthetic) and nanoparticles (graphene oxide, lamellar silicates, etc). A freeze drying approach is employed to produce the foam. The so produced panels will be characterized from both the physical-chemical (composition, morphology, etc.) and functional (thermal stability, flame retardancy, mechanical properties, thermal insulation properties) point of view. The aim is to obtain green and sustainable foams capable of rivaling with conventional and petroleum based polymer foams.
