Description In the current framework of strong commitments to decarbonize the whole production system, the energy sector plays a major role. The European taxonomy for sustainable activities aims to support investments to achieve climate neutrality of anthropogenic activities by 2050 in Europe. Energy system models can help defining the most compelling strategies to achieve an economically sustainable transition. In technology-rich energy system models of the TIMES family, discount rates play an important role, being involved in the evaluation of the objective function (total economic surplus/total cost of the energy system under exam). While cost trajectories for both well-established and innovative can be defined basing on the techno-economic literature, process-related discount rates are often based on educated guesses and/or assumptions made to reflect the expected consumer/market preference towards a specific technology. This thesis proposal is devoted to establishing a rigorous method to define process-related discount rates for supply- and demand-side technologies to be adopted in an ESOM instance to comply with the current macroeconomic framework and the prescriptions of the European taxonomy.

Required skills Attendance of the course "Models and scenarios for energy planning".
