Description
There is currently a limited understanding of the cloud feedbacks and precipitation in climate models and numerical weather predictions, which is a major source of uncertainty. Therefore, in order to reduce this uncertainty, a better characterization of cloud and precipitation vertical structure would be required. G-band radars have successfully been investigated with a ground based radar in Europe and with an airborne radar in US . The focus of this thesis is to study the feasibility of a spaceborne mission based on G-band radar instrument in the framework of a mission compatible with the micro satellite approach (single satellite or constellation) where a first satellite could be proposed in the frame of an ESA FutureEO programme as a SCOUT mission. Two main activities are envisaged:
1) provide a preliminary instrument concepts and trade-off analysis based on end to end radar simulations (i.e. simulate what the radar would see when flying over high latitude scenarios);
2) establish a preliminary satellite concept suitable for the instrument and provide preliminary satellite budgets (mass, volume, power, thermal, pointing, downlink), in order to assess accommodation compatibility with targeted satellite class.

Required skills Space Mission Design
Excellent programming level in Matlab / python.
Good knowledge of English (written and spoken).
Knowledge of weather and / or satellite orbits and / 0 radar and / or signal processing.
