Description The world of additive manufacturing is increasingly gaining importance not only in prototyping but also in industrial production. For this reason, the characterization and the optimization of these technologies is fundamental for a rapid and focused development. In this work the principal aim will be the application and the improvement of a method for the ABS or PLA thread deposition in the Fused Deposition Modelling. In order to gain up to 20% of mechanical strength in comparison with a classical geometry [±45], Mr. Gardan, Mr. Makke and Mr. Recho have conceived a smart threads’ deposition in the principal stresses direction. The “structured deposition” has been applied to CT specimens (pure mode I fracture) and presented a “dendritic fracture effect” and a simile ductile behavior. They have also worked on auxetic materials structures by metallic 3D printing. However, their study is not enough to deepen the problematic of bonding conditions between layers and filaments. To achieve a better understanding of structured materials local fracture toughness, this method is applied to bending mixed mode I+II specimens and reported in this work. Coherently Digital Image Correlation has been used to analyze the strain and displacement fields and to introduce the definition of an experimental method to determine the fracture toughness. The suggested study is based on an analysis of outcomes from last structured materials specimens’ characterizations and a feasibility project focused on a new heat treatment method that must be implemented and tested.
