Description The global food system is a key driver of water depletion, directly, through the over-exploitation of water resources, with withdrawals from surface water bodies and aquifers (70% of global withdrawals), and indirectly through deforestation, biodiversity loss, pollution, and climate change alterations. The Water Footprint indicator identifies the freshwater needed for producing goods along the full supply chain, thus providing a quantitative framework to analyze the volume of water embedded in agricultural goods and the water use efficiency.
These theses aim to enhance the resolution and accuracy of WF assessment by quantifying the impact and the climate risk associated with irrigation practices, climate change extremes, agro-business corporations, agro-chemical hazards, and the food choices at the consumers scale.
