Technological solutions and management models for next generation agriculture

keywords INDICATOR-BASED EVALUATION, PRECISION FARMING, SENSOR NETWORKS, SMART AGRICULTURE

Reference persons RENATO FERRERO

Thesis type RESEARCH

Description Next generation agriculture is aimed to guarantee food production and security, while reducing the environmental impact to actively mitigate the climate change. The thesis contributes to reach these goals through the evaluation and validation of smart solutions developed for reducing external inputs and improving productivity, health, quality, safety, and security of crops. The thesis activity concerns the development and optimization of sensor networks to monitor the resource consumption (e.g., water, pesticides, fertilizers). Based on the collected data, a set of indicators will be proposed and used to assess the impact of the management models adopted in next generation agriculture. Different agricultural scenarios will be considered, such as intensive mix farming systems that couple animal husbandry to the production of forage crops, and intensive industrial farming systems that entail cereals, processing tomatoes and non-food crops.
The methodology adopted through the thesis consists of observational studies, collection of technologies, testing the technologies in pilot systems, production of data set, demonstration activities in the living lab.
