Description BIM systems have become increasingly organic within structures and infrastructure design, operation, and maintenance. The linkage and interoperability between BIM systems and the design of structures using finite element codes (FEM) is an aspect of main interest because it allows the transition between information related to the classical architectural design of construction and typical aspects of structural design. This aspect is of strategic importance for professionals who increasingly work within design teams where there is a need to translate the group design vision into integrated software tools.
BIM modeling and interoperability to FEM codes for subsequent structural calculation represent the tools through which this thesis proposal is developed. It is aimed at the study of an aggregate present on the island opposite the city of Massawa (Eritrea). This study intends to develop from the construction of the BIM model of the building, representing both the architectural and plant aspects and the structural state of the existing, to the study of seismic vulnerability for a subsequent rehabilitation intervention, starting from the small scale of the building to the large scale of the aggregate.
The results will cover the definition of a general approach methodology to the problem, aspects of interoperability between BIM and FEM modeling software, the possible use of virtual and augmented reality tools for navigation of the pre-and post-intervention area, and aspects of seismic and structural engineering.
This thesis will be done in cooperation with an international working group of which the University of British Columbia UBC is a member.
