Development and evaluation of a low-cost sensor network for environmental monitoring

keywords CALIBRATION METHODS, DATA SPATIALIZATION, WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS

Reference persons RENATO FERRERO

Thesis type EXPERIMENTAL

Description Conventional approaches to environmental monitoring are based on sparse networks of static reference-grade detectors. The spatial coverage of such networks may be limited by the cost of instrumentation. In order to capture the spatial variability of the monitored sources, the thesis will investigate low-cost sensor-based technology, which could enable much denser sensor networks at a lower or comparable cost. In particular, the thesis activity aims to evaluate:
- effectiveness of different calibration strategies
- variability of the measurements according to the operating conditions (e.g., measurement range, microclimatic characteristics, etc.)
- possible improvement of the network performance obtainable through sensor redundancy
- spatialization of data, modeling the spatial distribution of the collected data.
