Description The NEW SPACE industry with small nanosatellites is looking for the best hardware and software solutions that satisfy the requirement for performance and efficiency. The increasing task of complexity required for embedded systems led to a decrease in bare-metal applications and the increasing of adoption of Operating Systems. Even though operating systems provide efficient solutions for meeting stringent real-time requirements, when used in space missions, the reliability issues deriving from the exposure of the devices to ionizing radiation should be taken into account.
This thesis is dedicated to find the answer to the question: when applying an application to space missions, do the operating systems provide higher reliability with respect to a bare-metal application running on a processor or not?

Required skills Basic knowledge of operating systems and embedded processors.
