Description In the early 1960s urban planner Giampiero Vigliano, at that time engaged in the drafting of Turin's inter-municipal plan, published two monographic studies on as many of the main municipalities in the Turin belt, Settimo (where he was born) and Rivoli. The book series he planned never came to completion (as did the plan he was working on), but it remains one of the most ambitious 20th-century projects aimed at systematically observing the history and spatial layout of the territories comprised within the city's metropolitan area.
This thesis project proposes to study the history of the municipalities of the first and second Turin belts, over the course of the twentieth century, experimenting with new themes and methodologies of investigation.
The theses, whose topic will be defined more precisely through a discussion with the tutors, may focus on a single place or on a plurality of places observed in their mutual connections. They will preferably be structured around one or more of the following areas of inquiry:
- Urban and infrastructural history
- History of living and housing
- Environmental history of territories
The theses will be supervised by Professors Filippo De Pieri and Sergio Pace, either individually or in collaboration. Other professors and experts, both internal and external to Politecnico, may join as co-tutors, depending on the expertise required by topics that will presumably have a strong multidisciplinary character. In those cases in which the number of the theses and the affinity between their themes might make it appropriate, the work might take the form of a collective research seminar on the history of the territories of the metropolitan area.
Required skills Excellent knowledge of the Italian language; aptitude for various forms of research (archival, bibliographic, field, etc.)
