Description Mathematics plays a central role in machine learning research, especially in rigorously setting learning problems and in proving theoretical guarantees for algorithms and learning models. Moreover, it should be highlighted that ideas and techniques of modern mathematics allow us to explore in depth the foundational aspects behind heuristics of common use in practice.
The topic of the thesis is agreed with the student after a discussion aimed at fitting their interests and skills. However, good familiarity with the basics of analysis and functional analysis is required, possibly of Fourier analysis as well.
Most of the proposed theses are reviews of literature - please take into account that building a suitable background to deal with research articles demands a certain commitment. Depending on availability of time and the maturity of the student we could also design a small research project (of theoretical nature or even application-oriented).
