Development of an open, customizable communication box for vehicular applications

keywords VEHICULAR NETWORKS

Reference persons CLAUDIO ETTORE CASETTI

Thesis type EXPERIMENTAL - DEVELOPMENT

Description Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) wireless communication solutions represent the future of the automotive industry. New generation cars are all going to be equipped with On-Board-Units (OBU) for connecting the vehicle with others as well as with the network and road infrastructures. Nevertheless, equipped vehicles rate is growing as slow as the cars renewal rate on the market. The goal of this thesis work is to develop a customizable and open hardware device connected with a high-precision GPS chipset and able to connect vehicles together following the latest telecommunication standards. The final hardware and software stack should provide a solution for easily equipping existing vehicles with different wireless technologies (cellular connectivity, Wi-Fi based communications, ...) in a plug-and-play spirit, with the aim of making them able to communicate with other connected road components leveraging messages defined by the European vehicular communication standards
(e.g., the so-called periodic CAM and event-based DENM messages). The reception and transmission of these messages will be made possible by adapting an existing open source communication stack for running on the selected hardware boards and for retrieving real-time data from the GPS chipset.

Required skills Requirements: Linux and good knowledge of C/C++ programming, basic embedded hardware knowlegde, passionate for innovation, embedded hardware and new vehicular technologies, willingness to experiment different solutions and work on real hardware.
