Thesis type NUMERICAL SIMULATION
Description In space missions that use atmospheric radar to observe clouds and precipitation, the return of the surface represents a disturbance whose presence must be mitigated as much as possible. Clutter subtraction requires an excellent knowledge of radar pointing and a detailed knowledge of the backscattering properties of the observed surface. During the thesis a simulator of the radar surface signal will be developed by coupling an antenna pattern with a very high resolution digital elevation model. A clutter suppression algorithm will then be implemented and tested. Particular attention will be paid to the impact of pointing uncertainties. The model will be applied both to nadir pointing radars such as envisaged for the ESA-JAXA EarthCARE mission (https://earth.esa.int/eogateway/missions/earthcare) and to oblique view configurations as expected for the Wivern mission (www.wivern. polito.it).
Required skills Excellent programming level in Matlab / python.
Good knowledge of English (written and spoken).
Knowledge of weather radar and / or signal processing.
Deadline 25/10/2024
