Description Functional neuro-rehabilitation applied to the restoration of motor activities of the distal segments of our body (e.g., hand or foot movements) is increasing interest in the clinical sciences thanks to its benefits in improving the quality of life for individuals with neuro-muscular damage or disorders.
Starting from a dedicated system for the control of functional electrical stimulation (FES), whose parameters are defined by the analysis of the acquired surface electromyographic (sEMG) signal, this thesis project aims to investigate the application of this system for the control of fine hand movements (e.g., finger clasping or grasping various objects). The candidate will need to study the best muscle-FES parameter coupling for the functional actuation of the hand movements, possibly modifying the functionality and components of the acquisition and stimulation system as needed.
Following the optimization of the FES control system, the thesis work will be concluded through the testing of an experimental protocol suitable for the validation of the developed approach.
