Description The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the importance of developing tools to analyze data in order to promptly identify the emergence of a new epidemic outbreak or wave, possibly due to a new variant. Concentration of COVID-19 in wastewater plants has been observed as a potential early indicator of upcoming resurgent waves.
The goal of this thesis is to explore the possibility of using such data to detect changes of phase of a disease in a timely manner. More precisely, the student will develop a mathematical model for the spread of COVID-19 that includes the wastewater infrastructure. Then, they will use optimization tools to identify the parameters of the model from epidemic and concentration data, and identify critical changing points in the epidemic spreading.
This project is a collaboration with ARPA Piemonte, who provided us the data on COVID-19 concentration in the wastewater.
