Description Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is an effective method in which CO2 is captured and separated, then transported to appropriate sites for storage. The ability to capture and store CO2 would allow its future reuse, either as such or for conversion into other chemicals, according to the principles of the circular economy. Conventional methods of gas separation, such as absorption, adsorption and cryogenic dissociation, require large amounts of energy and are therefore not very environmentally friendly. Membrane separation is considered one of the most promising separation technologies due to its environmental advantages, high adaptability to existing processes, low cost and good processability. Intrinsically microporous polymers (PIM) represent a class of polymers with exceptional capabilities in gas separation, the work will consist of developing mixed membranes to increase the selectivity/permeability ratio.
The project, carried out in collaboration with the Italian Institute of Technology's Centre for Sustainable Future Technologies, is based on chemical synthesis, membrane fusion and the functional and physico-chemical characterisation of the materials produced through advanced techniques such as thermal and spectroscopic analyses and microbalance absorption tests.

Required skills Interest in chemical synthesis and materials analysis

Notes The thesis will mainly take place at the IIT headquarters in enviromental park (Via Livorno 60)
