Description Hydrogen (H2) plays an important role in the future renewable energy system. It can be an energy carrier for large-scale storage and transport of renewable energies and acts as a key connecting element in the sectoral coupling concept. At peak times of renewable energy production (e.g. solar and wind), electricity could be used to produce H2 by means of electrolysers. Among the many gas-energy solutions, H2 fuel cells show the exceptional connection between H2-powered systems (vehicles, trains, aircraft, submarines, stationary and portable power generation) and H2 as an energy carrier, and could be the best candidates for building an affordable, resilient and clean energy economy in the current energy transition.
Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) stand out for their unique advantages: zero greenhouse gas emissions, high theoretical power density and energy conversion efficiency, and relatively low operating temperature and pressure.
Over the past decades, numerous national and international projects have brought together resources from universities, research centres and industries worldwide to overcome the critical technical barriers of fuel cell development, where cost, performance and durability are still the main challenges of the fuel cell industry and one of the limitations of hydrogen electrolysis.
The thesis is to apply a new type of concept in the synthesis of new polymers for ion transport across the membrane.
Required skills Interest in chemical synthesis and materials analysis. Interest in learning the basics of electrochemical processes.
Notes The thesis will mainly take place at the IIT headquarters in enviromental park (Via Livorno 60)
