Description Abstract:
The integration of neurodiverse and neuroatypical operators in manufacturing has been a challenging task. However, the emergence of collaborative robotics has opened up new possibilities for enhancing inclusivity in the manufacturing industry. This thesis proposes a research study on collaborative robotics for enhancing inclusivity in manufacturing, with a particular focus on cognitive load indicators and task assignment. The study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using collaborative robots to support neurodiverse and neuroatypical operators in performing manufacturing tasks and evaluate the impact of cognitive load on task performance.
Methodology:
The proposed study will consist of two main parts. The first part will involve conducting a state-of-the-art survey on inclusivity in manufacturing from a technology perspective. The survey will focus on collaborative robotics and the current state of the art in supporting neurodiverse and neuroatypical operators in manufacturing. The survey will also identify the challenges and opportunities for the development of effective collaborative robotics solutions for inclusivity in manufacturing.
The second part of the study will involve developing a dashboard for data acquisition and processing, definition and computation of relevant indicators for a cognitive load index associated with a manufacturing task, and the automatic task assignment to be carried out with the support of a robot assistant. The dashboard will be designed to collect data on the operator's physiological responses, such as heart rate and skin conductance, to evaluate the operator's cognitive load. The dashboard will also provide real-time feedback to the operator and the robot assistant to optimize task performance.
Expected Outcomes:
The proposed study is expected to provide several outcomes. Firstly, it will contribute to the development of a dashboard for data acquisition and processing, definition and computation of relevant indicators for a cognitive load index associated with a manufacturing task, and the automatic task assignment to be carried out with the support of a robot assistant. Secondly, it will provide insights into the effectiveness of collaborative robots in supporting neurodiverse and neuroatypical operators in performing manufacturing tasks. Lastly, it will highlight the potential benefits of using collaborative robots in manufacturing, particularly in terms of enhancing inclusivity and improving productivity.
Conclusion:
This thesis proposes a research study on collaborative robotics for enhancing inclusivity in manufacturing, with a particular focus on cognitive load indicators and task assignment. The study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using collaborative robots to support neurodiverse and neuroatypical operators in performing manufacturing tasks and evaluate the impact of cognitive load on task performance. The proposed study will provide valuable insights into the development and application of collaborative robotics in manufacturing, particularly in terms of enhancing inclusivity and improving productivity.
