Thesis type EXPERIMENTAL, RESEARCH THESIS WITH A COMPANY, RESEARCH, INNOVATIVE

Description CO2 is the main green house gas emitted to the atmosphere contributing to global climate change. Electrochemical reduction of CO2 can be exploited to remove it from exhaust gases and produce valuable chemicals and fuels, presenting an opportunity to support a low-carbon economy. In this experimental research work, the thesis student will became part of our research group and will optimize the coupled process of capture and electrochemical conversion of CO2, by using a reactor prototype developed between the Politecnico di Torino and an industrial partner within the European project SunCoChem (https://suncochem .eu/). To test the electrochemical cell and to intensify the process, a new test bench purchased within the INFRA-P CO2 Circle Lab project (https://co2circlelab.eu/) will be used, equipped with flow, pressure and temperature controllers and a semi-automated control system. The aim of the thesis is the study and optimization of different process operating conditions (pressure, flow rate of the reactants, etc). Electrochemical tests will be performed with electrodes prepared with innovative catalysts synthesized in collaboration with project partners and a spray-coating system will be used to deposit catalysts on conductive substrates. The preparation techniques of the electrodes guarantee their reproducibility and scalability, so that a future industrial application of the studied process is possible. The reaction products will be analyzed by techniques such as gas chromatography and mass spectrometry.
The experimental activities will take place at the SOLAR FUELS LAB, at DISAT.
Writing of the thesis in English is required.
