Description The objective of the thesis is to analyze how network sharing approaches can improve sustainability of radio access networks by reducing their energy consumption.
The research question is then: how much energy can be saved through sharing of radio access networks?
With sharing of radio access networks (RANs) we mean that two mobile network operators (MNOs), each owning a RAN infrastructure, agree on using parts of it in cooperation with each other, so as to minimize energy consumption by reducing the number of active parts in time periods when the traffic load allows.
The study will compare the energy consumption of RANs in few selected geographical areas that are served by several MNOs, considering alternative scenarios in terms of the kind of considered technologies (3G, 4G, 5G) and the kind of sharing technique.
Required skills Basic programming skills in python.
Knowledge on networking.
Knowledge on economic models are also well suited for the kind of problem.
