Thesis type MODELING
Description Water electrolyzers are considered a viable alternative for generating hydrogen from renewable energy sources. Recent impressive advances have demonstrated the potential of electrolysis technology, and ongoing efforts are devoted to finding innovative solutions to reduce system costs while maintaining a high lifetime. While performance can be tested fairly quickly, lifetime estimation is much more difficult, with a typical degradation time of thousands of hours for PEMWE, AEL, and AEM. Therefore, estimating the lifetime of different components requires time-consuming and expensive experiments. In this context, modeling of degradation mechanisms in electrolyzers is a very useful tool for predicting system performance over its lifetime as a function of operating conditions.
Required skills Numerical modeling, Electrochemistry, Transport and mass phenomena.
