Description The candidate will present some recent results in the context of variational fracture mechanics, i.e., the approach to to the study of fractures by means of calculus of variations. The energy to be minimized is the classical Griffith's energy, which models the competition between stored elastic energy and the energy needed for advancing the crack. The opening of the fracture over time is then approached in the context of quasi-static evolutions. The candidate is expected to obtain novel results on the energy release rate and on the stress intensity factor, by means of a detailed study of the behaviour near the crack tip. This thesis settles the basis for future work on the interplay between elasticity and the presence of defects in a material.
