ENERGY TRANSITION FOR A SUSTAIBLE FUTURE: MODELLING THE CITY TRANSITION AND DEVOLOPING TOOLS FOR SUPPORTYNG THE POLICY DECISION MAKING PROCESS
Reference persons ETTORE FRANCESCO BOMPARD
Description The context: energy plays a pivotal role in the society, interacting into three main dimensions (sustainability, equity and affordability), and is crucial in the welfare and survival of mankind. Cities are crucial because in cities leave 75% of European population and more than 65% of energy is consumed globally. So, the energy transition must target cities in a multidimensional perspective.
The problem: each action (installation of PVs, electrification of transport, waste management, ...) on the cities would imply investments and social involvement, impacting different dimensions (climate change, air pollution, energy efficiency, energy affordability and energy poverty, social acceptance, ...). These impacts need to be assessed in a holistic way.
The thesis activity: developing multi-dimensional models of the energy system of the city to be used for a what-if analysis of a set of different actions. Make these models available in a library that can be integrated in the IT energy platforms available at EST@energycenter to make them assessable through web interfaces and decision theatre to the relevant stakeholders.
