NATIONAL AND EU GAS SUPPLY SECURITY IN-BETWEEN GEOPOLITICS AND ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURES

Reference persons ETTORE FRANCESCO BOMPARD

Description The context: the procurement of energy is crucial for the energy security of a country depending on foreign countries for the primary energy supply (57% for EU 73% for Italy). The energy security is based on an external front (source country, energy corridors, both captive and open sea) and an internal front (national energy networks). The geopolitical stability of the source, the track of all the infrastructure (marine routes, pipelines, ...), the international conflicts play a major role in energy security.
The problem: EU and Italy rely for gas supply on foreign countries not always very stable in a geopolitical perspective. The level of security must be assessed and recovery plans and strategies in the case of a failure of the gas supply must be prepared, considering the physical infrastructure, the diversification of sources and the geopolitical criticalities of each involved country.
The thesis activity: mapping the EU gas infrastructure, asses the gas source for Italy and EU and develop a risk model and contingency planning for the security of gas supply to EU and Italy. Make these models ready the IT energy platforms available at EST@energycenter to make them assessable through web interfaces and decision theatre to the relevant stakeholders.
