Description The Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming increasingly integrated into our daily lives, from smart home applications to industrial solutions. However, this increased interconnectivity brings with it significant security and privacy challenges. It's crucial to be able to identify and handle anomalous or malicious behaviours in IoT devices to ensure that these devices don't pose a risk to users.
This thesis proposal falls within the context of the PRIN (Progetti di Rilevante Interesse Nazionale) project "AsCoT-SCE", recently accepted by the Ministry of University and Research. The project aims to develop methodologies and formalisms for the definition and representation of API functionalities in IoT environments, and how these can be validated and certified.
Students choosing this thesis will have the opportunity to focus on detecting anomalous or malicious behaviours in IoT devices. This includes studying existing techniques and designing new solutions to verify if the actions of IoT device functions match their manifests. Furthermore, students will have the chance to create a list of features, data, or network uses that don't match the device's manifest and/or explore known vulnerabilities that could be exploited by malicious actors.
Working on this thesis will provide students with valuable experience in the field of IoT security, with the opportunity to explore and develop solutions for current and pressing problems. Students will also have the opportunity to contribute to a cutting-edge research project.
