Description Electrochemical reduction of CO2 into valuable fuels and chemicals is of high interest from both economic and environmental points of view. This cutting-edge technology has good potential to build a sustainable carbon cycle and mitigate climate changes, simultaneously realizing mid/long-term storage of renewable electricity. Nevertheless, it is a hard challenging task to commercialize it even after a decade of intensive efforts by worldwide chemists, physicists and engineers. One of the intrinsic challenges is the complex reaction mechanism of electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), which results in a large range of products, including carbon monoxide (CO), formic acid (HCOOH), methane (CH4), ethylene (C2H4), ethanol (C2H5OH) and methanol (CH3OH), but without sufficient selectivity for a specific one. This characteristic of CO2 electroreduction technology calls for great efforts associated with catalytic materials. This project will focus on the synthesis and characterization of metal sulphide materials for the CO2RR, such as ZnS, SnS and CuS and so on, including: 1) synthesis of materials with a microwave-assisted solvothermal route; 2) characterize the morphology and chemical composition of the materials through XRD, EDX, FESEM, XPS and so on; 3) test the catalysts in a flow reactor; 4) correlate the materials’ properties to their performance.
