Description he Circular Economy (CE) is an industrial system that is restorative or regenerative by intention and design. It replaces the ‘end-of-life’ concept with restoration, shifts towards the use of renewable energy, eliminates the use of toxic chemicals, which impair reuse, and aims for the elimination of waste through the superior design of materials, products, systems, and, within this, business models. It operates at the micro level (products, companies, consumers), meso level (eco-industrial parks) and macro level (city, region, nation and beyond), with the aim to accomplish sustainable development, thus simultaneously creating environmental quality, economic prosperity and social equity, to the benefit of current and future generations.

Nevertheless, the assessment of circularity and its benefits currently lacks a unique reference standard widely adopted by practitioners, with a variety of tools developed by researchers and practitioners alike. The aim of this desk-based research project is thus to systematically review methods and indicators adopted to assess circularity at the macro level (city, region, nation and beyond) to enable the circular transition.

Expected start date: from November 2023
