Description The future of sustainable urban energy systems hinges on innovations in district heating and cooling networks. This thesis project delves into the realm of 5th-generation district heating and cooling networks, a groundbreaking technology that promises simultaneous heating and cooling to connected buildings. After conducting a comprehensive literature review to understand this emerging technology, the primary goal of the study is to develop an energy model for these networks. Subsequently, the thesis will explore the practical applications of these networks, with a particular emphasis on optimizing energy efficiency by strategically coupling specific users, buildings, or prosumers. To provide a holistic perspective, the work will also conduct a comparative analysis of traditional reversible air-water heat pumps, the main competitors of 5th-generation networks.
The core objectives of this thesis project are as follows:
1. Literature Review: Conduct an extensive literature review to gain a deep understanding of 5th-generation district heating and cooling networks, including their technology, benefits, and challenges.
2. Energy Model Development: Create a comprehensive energy model that simulates the operation and performance of a 5th-generation district heating and cooling network. This model will be adaptable for various scenarios and configurations.
3. Optimizing Network Efficiency: Investigate strategies for enhancing the global energy efficiency of these networks by coupling specific users or buildings in a synergistic manner.
4. Comparative Analysis: Conduct a rigorous comparative analysis between 5th-generation district heating and cooling networks and reversible air-water heat pumps to identify their strengths, weaknesses, and practical implications.
