Description The design of compact fusion reactors is enabled by the recent developments in high temperature superconductors (HTS) magnet technology. However, the promising concept of compact reactors also brings new issues that needs to be solved, one of which is the relatively high levels of neutron damage expected in the HTS. The interaction of neutrons with matter causes an avalanche of atomic displacements that results in the formation of stable defects of nanometric size.
In the thesis, this topic will be studied making use of Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations of the damage cascade. The student will help to develop the MD models for the process and will run the simulations for selected conditions, with a particular attention to extract structural and electronic properties to be compare with experimental observations.
