Thesis type EXPERIMENTAL

Description The scope of the thesis is exploiting the capabilities of smart vehicles, and in particular of the Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) protocol (https://www.car-2-car.org/about-c-its), that provides a framework for structured and efficient message transmission both for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure applications. In particular, the aim is to develop an algorithm that can analyze the speed and position of a vehicle of fleet of vehicles, communicate with the traffic infrastructure, and determine the optimal strategy so that the vehicle can benefit from the so called “green wave” (a specific timing that allows to catch a green light at multiple subsequent traffic lights).

The candidate will be required to:
1. Implement an algorithm that optimizes vehicle speed to allow to benefit from the “green wave” of traffic lights
2. Provide real time recognition of traffic light timing and queues
3. Create a scenario for end-to-end simulation that uses the hardware antennas for transmission and reception of messages
4. Possibly extend the algorithm to include entire urban areas, to optimize traffic congestion in a broader setting

The thesis will be supported by Concept Engineering Reply (https://www.reply.com/concept-reply), the company within the Reply Group specializing in digitizing and making the physical world smart through the development of IoT solutions applied to products, processes, and services. Concept Engineering relies on a group of experts in the fields of embedded systems (hardware and firmware), edge computing, IoT platforms, cloud computing, user channels, AI, ML, project management and PMO.
The target markets include automotive (and transportation in a broad sense), manufacturing, telco & media, insurance & finance, and medical. Additionally, an essential component of Concept Engineering is research and development, which aims to explore new technological frontiers to generate innovation.
Quality, innovation, flexibility, and enjoyment are the fundamental ingredients for making our projects successful and satisfying our clients.
