Descrizione Digital twins (DTs) are virtual replicas of real-world objects or systems that span their lifecycle, are updated from real-time data, and use simulation, machine learning, and reasoning to aid decision-making. They are highly complex virtual models that accurately represent physical entities. The market for digital twins is expected to grow significantly across various industries. While digital twins have already made substantial progress in several sectors, there is still room for further advancements. On top of that, there is much confusion about what a DT is and what is not. Nevertheless, there is a lot of work still left to do and a systematic review which assesses the state-of-the-art and how far we have gone could be beneficial for both the academia and the industries.
