Description This thesis activity will see the student work active in an experimental activity on the topic of technologies for detecting and quantifying methane fugitive flow rates from the distribution network.
The experimental activity will take place at a test field made up of various overhead and underground piping elements, set up in order to simulate gas dispersion phenomena in the atmosphere. The technologies involved can concern both analyzers for direct measurements of fugitive flow (punctual measurements) and analyzers placed on mobile platforms for environmental monitoring.
The thesis activities will concern areas of intersection between energy and environmental engineering, including: the bibliographic analysis of technologies and methodologies for quantifying fugitive emissions from the gas network, and the comparison between the environmental impact estimates resulting from BOTTOM-UP (i.e., based on direct measurements) and by TOP-DOWN methodologies (i.e., based on environmental monitoring). The experimental activities may involve examples of both types of technology in an experimental test field, i.e. an environment dedicated to the simulation, through controlled releases, of different natural gas emissions from different types of sources.
