Thesis type EXPERIMENTAL
Description Stress and cognitive load alter our mental and emotional processes, hindering decision-making in many situations in our daily lives. Our body is sensitive to such conditions, and several physiological signals, such as the photoplethysmographic signal (PPG) and respiration, contain important information regarding stress and cognitive load within them.
The proposed thesis work will be structured as follows:
1) The candidate will be asked to perform a state-of-the-art analysis regarding the relationship between respiration and the PPG signal.
2) Subsequently, the candidate will have to carry out experimental tests using the multi-channel acquisition equipment present in our laboratory to evaluate the variation of the two aforementioned signals with the variation of stress and cognitive load.
3) The data obtained will have to be processed in such a way as to extrapolate the most significant features from these signals. In particular, the focus is on extrapolating information concerning respiration from the PPG signal.
4) Finally, the candidate shall assess the degree of correlation between the PPG signal and respiration using an appropriate statistical analysis.
This process will allow the candidate to demonstrate the correlation between PPG signal-related parameters, respiration and variation in stress and cognitive load using state-of-the-art biomedical signal acquisition technologies.
