Description A monitoring system based on the acoustic emission (EA) technique is proposed for the characterization of damage phenomena on brittle and quasi-brittle materials. In particular, through the 3D procedure of EA source localization, it will be possible, through the estimation of the transmission velocity vp of the longitudinal type wave, to reconstruct the mapping of the elastic characteristics of the material (Ed). Thus, by exploiting the correlation between propagation and stiffness of the medium, a damage parameter will be proposed that is able to capture the evolution of damage in the time domain.
The thesis includes experimental activities at the department's laboratory.
