Thesis type MODELING AND DATA ANALYSIS
Description The effects of environmental factors such as thermal variations and acid rain lead to a degradation of the mechanical properties of rocks and in particular carbonate rocks. Several laboratory tests on both intact samples and sample subjected to an initial thermal and chemical aging propcess have shown a drop in terms of strength and deformability of these materials that are often used as ornamental stones and as construction materials for buildings.
The thesis concerns a part of numerical simulations that aim to quantify the degradation of the microstructural properties of these materials in order to better understand the experimental evidence. The results of the simulations, calibrated on the basis of experiments, may be useful for the development of appropriate degradation laws.
