Thesis type EXPERIMENTAL
Description Two-dimensional (2D) materials have become increasingly important in the scientific community owing to their exceptional properties and promising applications. These materials are relatively easy to obtain with traditional mechanical exfoliation, which nevertheless limit the flake lateral size to few tens of micrometers, posing problems in the fabrication of devices based on them and on industrial scalability. A recent development in this field is the metal-assisted exfoliation technique, emerging as a prospective approach for generating mm-sized high-quality 2D monolayers. The scope of this Master Thesis opening is the improvement of the metal assisted exfoliation for obtaining a reliable and reproducible process, with final goal of realizing large heterostructures based on different 2D materials. We look for a highly motivated candidate, with good manual skills, good knowledge of material science and nanotechnological processes. The background could be compatible with physics, material science, engineering (physics, electrical, mechanical, energetic).
The work tasks will consist in:
a. Improvement of the metal-assisted exfoliation, which our group has a well established expertise
b. Transfer of the exfoliated flakes of different materials to build heterostructures on metal contacts
c. Possible characterization of these structures by means of optical spectroscopy and electrical measurements
