Description Premise
In the last few years, virtual reality is establishing as a must have technology in several areas, ranging from videogames, to medicine or engineering. In the aerospace industry VR applications are now emerging as common tools supporting different activities, such as:
• Astronauts training
• Missions planning
• Realistic simulations
• Scientific data representations
Data representation and visualization is the context in which a technology like VR can give the best results: what is the best way to understand the meaning of data if not see them with your own eyes?
Objective
The thesis will start with the study and familiarization with the Astra Data Navigator (AND) software, a 3D tool to visualize star catalogs.
The aim of the thesis is to improve the current system and extend the list of its functionalities, with particular focus on improving the scientific data exploitation capabilities. The major improvements expected can be summarized as:
• Loading and dynamic rendering of astronomical catalogs (e.g. exoplanet catalog)
• Inclusion of scientific data analysis capabilities
• Improve the rendering of current stellar objects
• Analyze and process for import the DR3 catalog of Gaia.
