Descrizione The thesis is aimed to realize a parametric simulation environment to enable design of advanced building envelope solutions integrating nano-materials, enabling co-simulation for the assessment of energy use, thermal comfort and daylight comfort, in the framework of a broader project, in which advanced nano-materials are being investigated for integration in the building envelope.
The parametric environment will be based on the software Grasshopper for Rhino, using Energyplus and Radiance (through Honeybee) simulation engine for thermal and daylight simulations. The parametric environment should interface with BIM software (like REVIT), and make use of optimisation plugins to perform sensitivity analysis and engineering optimisation.
A number of case studies should be assessed in order to demonstrate the applicability of this parametric simulation framework considering different building envelope technologies (to be determined), different archetypes building (i.e. office, residential and school reference building for Italian market) and climate conditions (current and future scenarios).
The thesis will start with a literature review on (i) simulation methods, tools and performance metrics; (ii) interoperability; (iii) sensitivity and optimisation methods and tools; (iv) archetypes reference low energy buildings. In parallel the student will develop skills related to building performance simulation in HoneyBee (EnergyPlus and Radiance) and use of GrassHopper. Consequently, the student will develop a parametric co-simulation interface in GH, to allow sensitivity analysis for building performance for building envelope systems, for the case study selected. This co-simulation environment will be applied to a number of case studies, as above described, to be defined.

Conoscenze richieste Knowledge of Building Physics fundamentals and advanced concepts (at least 2 building physics courses completed during the BSc and MSc degree, one of them related to parametric design of building envelope systems, using GH tools); willingness and attitude for literature review and modelling work; Excellent Excel skills; Use of Grasshopper for Rhino, Revit (or similar) and basic use of GH Honeybee plugins.
