Description Context
In the field of space technology, there is an increasing demand for the use of mathematical models and optimization algorithms, both at the system and at the subsystem level, to address increasingly challenging missions in both scientific and non-scientific and non-scientific domains.
One area of particular interest is typically navigation guidance and Control (GNC). Very often, for the feasibility of the mission, it is necessary to minimize (directly or indirectly) the fuel consumption. This goal is usually pursued either through the search for optimal trajectories or at the level of the design of the satellite itself (e.g. by optimizing the layout of the thrusters relevant to the spacecraft control).
Objectives
The objective of this project concerns the development of ad hoc mathematical models and optimization algorithms for reducing consumption and increasing spacecraft efficiency in specific operational scenarios.
Detailed description of the tasks
Selection of specific operational scenarios;
Development of dedicated mathematical models and optimization algorithms based on:
nonlinear mathematical programming, mixed integer programming, and non-convex optimization;
validation of the models/algorithms implemented on the specific operational scenarios.
Tools already available
Optimization in-house library;
Optimization environments (Matlab, Python, COIN-OR).

Required skills Skills required
Matlab;
Python (optional);
Basic knowledge of orbital mechanics;
Basic knowledge of optimization techniques (optional)
English, at least at intermediate level

Notes General requirements
Master Thesis / Technical Report shall be written in English
Creation of technical documentation for the specific applications
