Open architecture in the making. Windows and window frames in 17th and 18th century Turin Baroque architecture

keywords CONSTRUCTION HISTORY

Reference persons EDOARDO PICCOLI

Description Windows and window frames are essential elements in the design of Baroque architecture. Architects such as Filippo Juvarra, Benedetto Alfieri, or Bernardo Vittone fully explored the technical and aesthtetical potential of door and window design, in buildings such as Superga, Palazzo Madama or Stupinigi. Yet, little is know of how 17th and 18th century window frames looked like, and what materials they were made of. The thesis plans to explore the subject through iconography, archival research and direct survey. More than one student is welcome as a candidate, as the subject is quite vast and suitable to be explored in many different directions.

Required skills The thesis requires reading archival documentation, and some scholarly literature, in Italian (more reading in English is also required).
