Description Biofuels may play a pivotal role in substituting fossil fuels in the hard-to-abate sectors (e.g., heavy transports, aviation, etc.). However, processes producing biofuels are poorly represented in energy system models, as well as the actual production potentials. At the same time, biofuels production may be in competition with agriculture production in the land use. This thesis aims to:
1) model existing and future processes for biofuels production with lumped techno-economic parameters suitable to be used in energy system optimization models;
2) integrate such technologies in the TEMOA-Italy model coupled with proper constraints to represent the Italian biofuels potentials;
3) perform a scenario analysis to assess the role played by biofuels in the decarbonization of the Italian energy system in future energy scenarios.
