Description The decarbonization and energy transition paths strongly relies on the electrification of the end-uses. The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) could help in improving the electricity dispatchment more rapidly and efficiently as expected. For instance, Enel succeeded in decreasing the power outages by 15% making use of AI to identify and prevent grid problems. By the way, computations performed in machine learning and AI require massive amounts of energy and data centers require heat removal which often comes through water cooled systems. These tasks make the modelling (both energy and water use) of these technologies aspects which need to be taken into account. This thesis proposes the evaluation of the energy consumption due to machine learning and AI, and an assessment of its impact on the future Italian and/or European energy system.
