Parole chiave ENERGY MODELS, NUCLEAR FISSION, POWER SECTOR, SCENARIO ANALYSIS

Descrizione The current nuclear fission capacity in Europe is undergoing a slow but steady phase-out, despite its zero-carbon emissions during operation which may help in reaching the ambitious climate goals set by the European Union in the framework of the Green Deal. The comprehensive representation of the nuclear fuel chain in energy system optimization models, including fuel extraction, processing and re-processing and the characterization of innovative reactor technologies (e.g., small modular reactors) is a crucial point to better qualify the possible future role of nuclear technologies. This thesis proposal aims to:
1) study the current nuclear fuel chain representation in the TEMOA-Europe model;
2) assess gaps in the current nuclear fuel chain modeling;
3) construct an updated nuclear fuel chain and a techno-economic characterization for innovative reactor technologies;
4) develop a scenario analysis to assess the possible future role of innovative fission technologies in the European framework in ambitious climate mitigation scenarios.
