Description In the context of the research activities of the Internet Media Group, we are looking for a master thesis student with strong interests in investigating techniques for video quality analysis in particular using large, subjectively annotated datasets (already available). The student will work mainly on the extraction of features from these datasets that are useful for estimating the subjective quality of video content, and then on analyzing the performance of the techniques in terms of computational complexity and visual quality using, for example, state-of-the-art systems such as Netflix's VMAF. The activity will be able to use servers available to the research group. The activity does not require being physically present at the Politecnico.
Required skills Reasonable knowledge of Unix/Linux (basic shell scripting), being able to compile already available C programs; use of python; Reasonable knowledge of digital multimedia signal coding tools, i.e., being able to encode/decode a video and evaluate the resulting quality. A reasonably good mark in the "Internet Video Streaming" course (or the older course "Elaborazione e trasmissione di informazioni multimediali" course) is strongly appreciated but not strictly required if the student is motivated.
