Monitoring the use of pedestrianised public spaces. The case study of Torino Mobility Lab
Reference persons LUCA STARICCO
Description The aim of this thesis is to evaluate if closing streets to motorised traffic increases pedestrian mobility and the use of public space. The case study of the thesis is the Torino Mobility Lab project, which recently led to the pedestrianisation of three stretches of road in the San Salvario district. The effectiveness of this project has been monitored by the city through the application of a methodology developed by the Danish architect Jan Gehl: it is based on on-site observations of the number of pedestrians walking on these streets and the number and type of activities taking place there. The thesis student will have to apply this methodology again in October 2024 and compare the results obtained with those of previous sessions, in order to verify whether in the long term, pedestrianisation has been effective in promoting active mobility and greater social use of public space.
