Description The aim of this MS thesis is the development and characterization of new materials that can be competitive with commercial ones while exhibiting more sustainable/greener characteristics. The application is addressed to materials for thermal insulation in buildings. Raw materials include waste glass and sustainable ceramics (e.g. clay). Preparation of materials will include the design of suitable formulations as well as the crushing and milling procedures; waste vitrification can also be carried out, if appropriate.
Porosity will be obtained by different methods, including 3D printing technologies.
Characterization techniques will include thermal analyses, assessment of composition (EDS) and morphology (SEM, micro-computed tomography), mechanical properties, permeability and other functional properties when relevant (e.g. leaching tests).
